Dumbbell Lateral Raise - How To

Wondering how to do a dumbbell lateral raise correctly?

You may have questions, such as:

Dumbbell Lateral Raise - How to Perform

1. Select a light weight.

2. Pick up your dumbbells and hold them at your sides - palms facing your sides.

3. Maintain a 10 to 15 degree bend in your elbows throughout the dumbbell exercise.

4. Using only your shoulder muscles, raise your dumbbells in a semi-circle to slightly above shoulder level.

5. Following the same arc, return the dumbbells back to the starting position.

Performance Tip

Tip - At the top of the exercise - when your arms are slightly above parallel with your shoulders, turn your thumbs down as if you were pouring water from a pitcher.




A Better Option?

Upright rows can empower you to not only train the same muscle as lateral raises (the medial deltoid), but also you can train your front shoulder (anterior deltoid) and neck muscles (trapezius) - in one exercise.

In short, you can train 3 muscle groups instead of just one

Upright Rows - How to Perform

1. Select a light/medium weight.

2. Pick up your dumbbells (or barbell) and hold them in front of your thighs.

3. Pulling with your elbows (always keeping them higher than your hands), slowly bring your dumbbells up to slightly below your chin.

4. Keeping your dumbbells close to your body, slowly lower them back down to the starting position.

Performance Tips

Tip 2 - If you would like to give more stimulus to your trapezius, simply widen your grip.
