Bowflex Dumbbells Have a Cheap Plastic Core!

by Tom Watson
(Chesterbrook, PA)

I like the Selecttech 552, 52.2 lb. dumbbells; however one fell to the ground on me and the plastic circular shell that held the 5 lb. bar in place on one of them broke off. It is now unavailable, therefore I cannot perform an exercise that calls for 2 db's using a combination that includes the 5 lb. increment.

I am searching for a vendor who will fix it. I hope it is not a throw-away world even with this expensive equipment.

I say that the Bowflex dumbbells are nice, convenient, and quick to use, but not sturdy. You need to baby them and not slam them to the floor, nor clang them together for their "CORE IS CHEAP PLASTIC".

If anyone knows where to go to fix them please let me know at tom_e_watson@verizon.net.

Bow Flex is Poor quality and worthless warranty NEW
by: Anonymous

Funny I just got off the phone with bowflex and my red plastic piece that goes down the center of the weights broke off and I don't even know how. When I was working out one of the weights came off and about killed me. I called and asked to buy the piece even if they wouldn't warranty it but they said you have to buy the whole handle for $75 unless you can prove you bought it! Wow really, how else did I get it. The sports store that we bought it from is no longer in business so I'm stuck with a piece of junk that doesn't even work anymore. Definitely won't buy bow flex any more what a joke.

Has anyone found a place to replace the cheap plastic part that holds the plates in place? I can't believe an engineer designed this with plastic???

It's an expensive mistake
by: Anonymous

Bowflex doesn't sell those little ultra brittle plastic plates separately. If you break the plates in the 1090 dumbells, you'll be out over $200 EACH for entire replacement handles. Why they aren't made of something stronger like nylon or metal, I don't know.

So to answer your question - yes Bowflex has ensured that these are incredibly expensive throw-away pieces.

Thanks for the advice :)

Thanks for the heads up. I usually don't drop my dumbbells or bang them together at the top. But I will definitely take care with them.

As far as replacement parts go, the only place I know of is Bowflex itself. I've received several replacement parts for my Bowflex home gym. When it was under warranty everything was free. Even now after my warranty has run out, prices are still reasonable.
