Compound and Isolation Exercises

You have 2 types of exercises to choose from, compound or isolation. Compound exercises (like squats and leg presses) train multiple muscles across more than one joint, while isolation exercises (like leg extensions) train only one muscle across 1 joint.

How can this help you? By doing a majority of compound exercises you can train more of your body in the same amount of time.

    Example:

If you did leg extensions, only your quadriceps (front of your thighs) would be working.

In contrast, if you did squats, your quadriceps, upper and lower hamstrings, glutes, calves, and abdominals, would all be working.

    Another Example:

If you did stiff-leg deadlifts, you would be training your upper hamstrings along with your lower back.

In contrast, if you did leg presses, you would be training your quadriceps and your hamstrings.
